Judy Budnitz is especially skilled in capturing the irritating qualities of American society. I don't know anyone else that does it like her.

This short story makes one of the easiest mistakes out there for young writers. It seems rushed, and without the proper pause from description. When diving into dialog, it becomes fast and difficult to read. If it is a phone call, specify that. Do not use dialect to do that, however. Show, don't tell.

But Elizabeth, aren't you saying she should *tell* that this is a phone conversation while what she's doing is *showing* the phone conversation. Show and tell, why not.
